Ideas and concepts the group discussed:

  • When people sit down and talk to each other about how they want their community to look in 10, 25 or 50 years, we can begin to see ways to make it happen. It may mean preserving a quiet lifestyle, maintaining views of open lands and ranches, and seeing the value in old cabins and historic buildings. When we talk to each other, we can find ways to do that and support businesses growth and stability.
  • Support Local Businesses/Buy Local. The Quick Guide helps find services and when a business is not in the Quick Guide it takes longer to find them.
  • Preserve existing quality of life. Rural, agricultural, quiet, cultural sites, authenticity.
  • Bank Branch or functioning ATM in other county locations such as Torrey and Bicknell.
  • Maps that show county businesses, scenic views, historical buildings, services, trails, etc., to encourage visitors to drive throughout the county. Ten Winder encouraged people to read the book Civic Tourism.
  • People want the Chuckwagon store to stay open more months.
  • Businesses are concerned about "demand charges" each month from Garkane. Marcus Lewis will research this problem and send WCBA his findings.
  • Community connections discount card: Marcus Lewis is researching how to have a value card available to residents that encourages and rewards local purchases.
  • People appreciate businesses that offer "locals" a discount. Blondie's was specifically mentioned.
  • Business owners want updates about legislative and regulatory issues that affect small businesses, plus updates on how to save on employee health insurance. WCBA needs to identify people to gather this info.
  • Business owners and WCBA can engage high school students by teaching one class a year in "Commerce in the County". This program is facilitated by Francis Metcalfe.
  • More events will boost visitor numbers. Tina Anderson wants to start a running event. Other events were encouraged.
  • Highway info signs: Notom wants a sign on Hwy 24 like the sign for Giles Historic Ghost Town.
  • WCBA should provide regular Educational Classes on Social Networking, Quick Books, Marketing and other topics.
  • New Ideas and Projects:

    1. Grantwriting workshop/training: Ty Markham wants to find out who in Wayne County can help write grants, including the people who write grants for the school district.
    2. Maps: Ted Winder will help on the info and culture map. This group might want to come up with ideas for other "themed" maps for bike trails, historic areas and buildings, businesses, destinations, scenic views, snowmobiling. USFS is putting out new map this February.
    3. Watchdog for legislative issues: WCBA will ask Wayne County services to provide updates.
    4. Healthcare Group discounts: WCBA will ask Wayne County services to provide updates.
    5. Bank branch or fully functioning ATMs in Torrey, Bickell and other locations: Erika Reed
    6. Cultural and Historic assets: everyone is interested in talking about old cabins and important places.
    7. Training and Educational Committee: QB training, Tech and web marketing: Nan Anderson, Marcus Lewis, Lisa Lewis.
    8. Google Maps: Ty recommended businesses check on Google Maps for accuracy of their business information.

Next Steps: People are volunteering to get involved. WCBA will have another meeting to get people working on specific projects.
